Glory in a great mistake

My mother had a poster on the wall of her office that said “There is Glory in a Great Mistake”. It must have been right, because this morning on NPR, they announced that today is the 18th anniversary of the speech Vice-President Dan Quayle gave when he said “What a waste it is to lose one’s mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful.” Think of that, 18 years later and it still makes the news. I gave it some more thought and realized that I probably wouldn’t even know who Harry von Zell was if he hadn’t introduced President Hoover as “Hoobert Heever” in 1931. (no, I wasn’t there, wise guys, but I have heard recordings)
